Public Affairs
ESA's Public Affairs Office focuses on the Society's goals of raising public awareness and ensuring the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision-making. The Office engages in both media and policy outreach to implement these goals, working closely with ESA members and elected leaders to inform policy and convey ecological reserach results through the national and international media.
ESA’s policy activities aim to contribute ecological information to public policy through activities such as ESA letters, Capitol Hill briefings, congressional visits and participation in coalitions.
Recent Activities:
On November 2, 2011, ESA sponsored a congressional briefing: "Using Science to Improve Flood Management." Emily Stanley (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and Jeff Opperman (The Nature Conservancy, Ohio Field Office) addressed the function of floodplains and managing rivers as systems and for multiple benefits.
They suggested that the nation's aging levee infrastructure and continued high costs from floods argue for adding green infrastructure solutions. Briefing presentations and more information are available here.
Communications activities at ESA encourage broad public understanding of ecology, primarily through press releases for the mass media and through the ESA blog, EcoTone

- Solutions for a nitrogen-soaked world
Nitrogen is both an essential nutrient and a pollutant, a byproduct of fossil fuel combustion and a fertilizer that feeds billions, a benefit and a hazard, depending on form, location, and quantity. Agriculture, industry and transportation have spread nitrogen liberally around the planet, say sixteen scientists in the latest edition of ESA's Issues in Ecology series, "Excess Nitrogen in the U.S. Environment: Trends, Risks, and Solutions," with complex and interrelated consequences for ecological communities and our dependence upon the resources they provide, as well as human health.
